Success targetting coreAssembler on FPGA

Just instantiated an AMBA bus structure into a cyclone III FPGA from Altera. Toolchain was a bit of a pain but most of that now sorted out. Now in a position to make arbitrary bus and peripheral structures. Just need cores now. And some form of memory.

Symantec speaks out on GAO medical device security report

Axel Wirth of Symantec has written an article about the recent GAO medical device security recommendations.  While praises the execution of the study, he points out that the problems identified in the report represent just the tip of the iceberg.  Heres a snippet from Symantec:

However, there is another set of risks to consider. As discussed above, the GAO report analyses the security risks of these compact, resource-restrained implantable devices. This is, of course, critical given the device�s impact on patient health and potentially, life or death. But the medical device infrastructure of healthcare systems and hospitals is far more complex. It includes a wide range of medical devices from simple to complex, from small to large, built on proprietary platforms or based on commercial, off-the-shelf software (COTS). The latter introduces its own set of risks through a �PC under the hood� design approach since the commercial operating systems or other software can easily become an entry point for malware, whether it targets the specific device or generally exploits a vulnerability specific to the chosen platform with the device then becoming �collateral damage�.

In effect, Symantec is asking whether the scope of the GAO report was too narrow to capture a generalizable set of lessons about the ecosystem of medical device security risks.  The implication?  The medical device security iceberg is much bigger that the GAO report would indicate.

Support Position for Oracle Products Running on VMWare Virtualized Environments

Today on Oracle website I discovered this interesting announcement on Oracle support status for VMware environments.
On my company we have a VMWare support and already several VMWare virtualized environments, but we never thought to use those envs to virtualize some Oracle databases. We already need to virtualize Oracle databases, especially those for development and pre-production platforms, but we were waiting for just a IBM blade order.
In my opinion I think to still suggest and implement the Oracle VM solution to my CTO because there are some issues not clear on the document and, at this moment, this VMware support position doesnt fit at all to our requirements because we would like to implement a RAC virtualized environment formed by 10gR2 nodes.

This is the position of Oracle at 8 november 2010 (see doc id 249212.1 on metalink for more details and news). In bold I have highlighted my doubts.

Support Status for VMware Virtualized Environments

Oracle has not certified any of its products on VMware virtualized
environments. Oracle Support will assist customers running Oracle products
on VMware in the following manner: Oracle will only provide
support for issues that either are known to occur on the native OS, or
can be demonstrated not to be as a result of running on VMware.

If a problem is a known Oracle issue, Oracle support will recommend the
appropriate solution on the native OS. If that solution does not work in
the VMware virtualized environment, the customer will be referred to VMware
for support. When the customer can demonstrate that the Oracle solution
does not work when running on the native OS, Oracle will resume support,
including logging a bug with Oracle Development for investigation if required.

If the problem is determined not to be a known Oracle issue, we will refer
the customer to VMware for support. When the customer can demonstrate
that the issue occurs when running on the native OS, Oracle will resume
support, including logging a bug with Oracle Development for investigation
if required.

NOTE: Oracle has not certified any of its products on VMware. For Oracle RAC, Oracle will only
accept Service Requests as described in this note on Oracle RAC 11.2.0.2 and later
releases.

Story of my Gateway VX1120 and Custom Refresh Rates on Windows and Linux

A few months ago I picked up a Gateway VX1120 from a computer store in town for $5, not knowing if it would work or not. I was always a fan of CRT monitors, and seeing something of this size, I had to jump on it.

Got it home, plugged it in, and found out that it worked fine. Instantly replaced the Acer S201HL I was using without regrets. Colors were more vibrant, and animations are much smoother (one of my favorite things to do when switching from LCD to CRT is to move a window across my desktop to observe the smoothness). Plus the resolutions available were extensive, so I was sure I could find the right resolution to use daily. The other CRT monitors I have in the house were limited to around 1024x768, or something slightly higher at a lower refresh rate, so they werent too ideal.

After some time, I found that the resolution of 1280x960 suited perfectly as a default resolution. Its not high enough to make text hard to see, and at the same time, its large enough for the desktop not to feel cramped. The highest stock refresh rate for this resolution was 85Hz, which was great and all, but I soon looked into a way to improve that.

On Windows, I used a tool called Custom Resolution Utility (CRU). It allowed me to generate custom resolutions and refresh rates. I wanted to run at 120Hz just to be able to claim I had such a monitor, so that was the first refresh rate I tried. It didnt work; and the monitor complained about the frequency being out-of-range.

After a little bit of research, I found that my horizontal scan frequency could go as high as 121kHz. So going by that, I then had the idea to keep trying resolutions with CRU until my horizontal scan frequency was just under that limit. Lucky me, 119Hz seemed to have worked fine.

So in Windows, the refresh rate wasnt too hard to handle. Things got a bit more interesting when I went over to Linux however. I use an AMD Radeon HD 7850 graphics card (this specifically), so I have the choice of either using AMDs proprietary driver (fglrx), or the open-source drivers. The refresh rate on my screen however seems to act differently depending on which driver I use though.

If I recall correctly, I was able to use the CVT-generated 119Hz with fglrx without issue (its been a while since I used fglrx with this monitor), but this wasnt the case with the open-source driver.


Looking back at cvt, I noticed that my hsync value was 122.59 for 119Hz. Definitely over the 121kHZ limit, so then I tried going to 118Hz. It ended up at 121.45, which was still over the limit. I wasnt sure if 121kHZ was a hard limit, so I added the refresh rate and tried it anyway. Both 119Hz and 118Hz failed to work; so I tried 117Hz. Got the hsync value of 120.31, which was safely under the limit, and worked fine.

Im unsure how CRU and cvt generate the numbers they do, but a comparison at some point would be a great idea, whenever I find the time to do so.

So far, this monitor is still working great, and I have no plans of replacing it anytime soon, unless I go back to my standing desk setup.

Study on St Jude medical device security deemed “inconclusive” by University of Michigan researchers

A recent report that alleged security flaws in St. Jude Medical�s pacemakers and other life-saving medical devices has major flaws of its own. That�s according to a team of University of Michigan researchers who say they�ve reproduced the experiments that led to the allegations, and come to strikingly different conclusions.

The U-M team is composed of several leading medical device security researchers and a cardiologist from the U-M Health Systems Frankel Cardiovascular Center. �Hyperbolic� and �sloppy� are words they use to describe the unorthodox report, which was released last week by short-selling investment research firm Muddy Waters Capital and medical device security firm MedSec, Ltd.

The U-M team reproduced the error messages the report cites as evidence of a successful �crash attack� into a home-monitored implantable cardiac defibrillator. But they showed that the messages are actually the same set of errors you�d get if you didn�t have the device properly plugged in.


When it�s implanted, a defibrillator�s electrodes are connected to heart tissue via wires that are woven through blood vessels, explains Kevin Fu, associate professor of computer science and engineering at U-M and director of the Archimedes Center for Medical Device Security. Fu is also co-founder of medical device security startup Virta Labs.

Through these wires, implantable defibrillators can perform sensing operations and also send shocks if necessary.

�When these wires are disconnected, the device generates a series of error messages: two indicate high impedance, and a third indicates that the pacemaker is interfering with itself,� said Denis Foo Kune, former U-M postdoctoral researcher and co-founder of Virta Labs.

On page 17 of the Muddy Waters report, a screenshot cites these very error messages as proof of a security breach.

�But really the pacemaker is acting correctly,� Fu said. �To the armchair engineer it may look startling, but to a clinician it just means you didn�t plug it in. In layman�s terms, it�s like claiming that hackers took over your computer, but then later discovering that you simply forgot to plug in your keyboard.�

Added Foo Kune, �While there still could be security problems, the screenshot is anything but supportive of the claim. When researchers with limited medical training go public with unvetted claims, it�s easy to jump to conclusions.�

Ethicists and other researchers have criticized MedSec�s technique of teaming with a short-seller to publicize its preliminary findings�and benefit financially, no less.

Short-selling is an investment practice that essentially involves betting that a particular stock will decline in value. If it does, then the investment firm profits. In this case, MedSec made a deal with Muddy Waters to receive a share of those profits. St. Jude�s stock fell sharply over the weekend.
