SWEET MEMORIES

SWEET MEMORIES

I started playing Warcraft 3 after coming back from seaside where I spent lovely time with my friends. One of them, Aca, gave me a game CD to repay me for helping him out with money during our holiday. After several days which I spent with my friends figuring out what was the game about, I decided to go in LAN and to play some games. Me and three of my friends decided to...
play 2 on 2 match on the biggest map we can find with some specific rules. I remember as it was just yesterday, how we picked Divide and Conquer and used a hand-game to decide who will be in team with who.
We agreed not to attack eachother for at least 15 minutes because we needed time to build up our armies. We also agreed to announce each attack so everyone can be well prepared.
Even tho I was complete newbie I obviously got the worst possible ally. This friend of mine was so slow, asking me every second what this Hero does, how many towers should he make, how can he upgrade the base and so on. Like I freaking knew the answers after having 2 days of checking out how to move my mouse cursor and using keyboard at the same time.
Struggling with my own game problems, and having troubles to answer his questions, our opponents were getting stronger and stronger and with each attack, we were closer to defeat. They had this perfect plan to destroy me first, because they were saying that I might make them some problems and my friend is complete newbie and killing him will be a piece of cake.
That is how it was and after several successful attacks I was literally waiting for the to finish us and I used that time to check out for some new things that my race offers. Thats how I become aware of Workshop and towers that I can make.
THE IDEA
I made around 50, because my gold count was very big and my opponents were in their bases recreating their armies. After a while, they came right next to my base, proudly yelling "We are attacking!". I had that hidden evil smile on my face when they started moving to my bunker because I knew I made the right stuff.
As their units were dying my evil smile was becoming demonic laugh as and they couldnt believe what is going on. Looking at what was left of their big army after only few seconds on the hot field that was under the siege of my Canon towers they were trying to figure out how to beat the beast. The rule was that once you go into the battle, there is no retreat. Fight until the last unit. So they obviously lost that battle and few next battles that came after.
I felt invincible, loudly saying how I found the perfect strategy, the unbeatable recipe. My bunker was getting bigger and bigger and I was expanding it from goldmine to goldmine because I had no units. I only had Palading level 10 in my base, sitting and waiting for another wave of enemies to find out that level 10 is the maximum level you can get.
THE SALVATION
Game was getting in the third hour and my opponents still couldnt figure out the solution to break my base. They were just repeating their actions which caused the result being repeated over and over again. I might lost a few towers in each wave but I had more than 100 of them so it really didnt matter.
We were running out of the time that we payed for playing in LAN and two of them went to the guy who was working in the cafe. In their way to the PC where that guy was stationed, they couldnt stop talking about their plans on how they will beat my Canon towers. I was, along with my newbie teammate, laughing at their hopeless situation and waiting for them to attack so my Canon towers bring me another flawless victory.
I noticed that the guy who was maintaining the cafe kept them longer he should and I also noticed that evil smile that I had hour ago when I found out about my perfect defending solution. While they were approaching to their PCs, the guy who they spoken to just about a minute ago, loudly said what he must have said to them few seconds ago: "JUST MAKE MANY BIRDS! THEY CANT ATTACK BIRDS!" I remember that the smile from my face vanished and that I immediately thought:
"What is this guy talking about? WHAT BIRDS?" It did put the fear in my bones but at that time, my Warcraft 3 experience which was several hours long, was  telling me that Canon towers will kill everything they see. I was comforting myself and I didnt want my enemies to see the fear in my eyes or to hear it in my voice. So I kept doing the same and that was making Canon towers.
Finally, they came near my base and proudly and loudly announced their attack. I instantly said something like: "Come on bitches, you are just the food!" And then they moved their army of Wyverns and Gargoyles toward my bunker of Canon towers. And they were attacking and attacking and attacking while my Canon towers and Paladin level 10 were observing what is going on and how the kingdom of my towers disappears in fire.
In first few seconds I stood quietly, waiting a reaction from my army of towers to please itself and make a fucking move but after a minute I was starting to talk with my PC like a commander that talks to useless soldier: "Attack you, cunt! What the fucking is the problem, why just not fucking attack?" And then someone touched me on my shoulder and I turned to see who it was. It was the guy that my enemies were talking to few minutes ago, smiling at me like he was the one who owned my base and my lovely Canon towers. "Your towers cant attack birds" - he said. I instantly asked why not and if that is some kind of bug but he couldnt find the proper answer. He was just repeating "Because they just cant". I just said: "Okay, then it must be a bug." and continued looking at my final defeat.
After the game I came to my enemies who were my friends in real life and congratulated them on their victory. They admitted that they wouldnt be able to beat my strategy if that guy didnt tell them about the birds who, after that day, became a hit.
Now I know that Canon towers attack only ground units and I dont make Paladin when I want to win the game. Still, this one was of the best and dearest games Ive ever played.

SWEET HOME

SWEET HOME

Nintendo's vision for the NES in Europe and America was a frustratingly wholesome one. In the West, Capcom was mainly known as the developer of Disney games and Mega Man, but in their home country it was a very different matter. They birthed a reputation for horror and gore years before Resident Evil with their 1989 game Sweet Home.

SWEET HOME ALASKA by Carole Estby Dagg

SWEET HOME ALASKA by Carole Estby Dagg

Earlier this year, several people wrote to ask me about Carole Estby Daggs Sweet Home Alaska, a story set in Alaska, in 1934, about the Matanuska Colony (also called the Palmer Colony). The map to the right shows you where the colony was.

Published by Penguin Random House (one of the Big Five publishers in the U.S.), Daggs book came out in February of 2016. It is pitched at middle grade children.

Heres the synopsis for Sweet Home Alaska:
This exciting pioneering story, based on actual events, introduces readers to a fascinating chapter in American history, when FDR set up a New Deal colony in Alaska to give loans and land to families struggling during the Great Depression.
Terpsichore cant wait to follow in Laura Ingalls Wilders footsteps . . . now she just has to convince her mom. Its 1934, and times are tough for their family. To make a fresh start, Terpsichores father signs up for President Roosevelts Palmer Colony project, uprooting them from Wisconsin to become pioneers in Alaska. Their new home is a bit of a shockits a town still under construction in the middle of the wilderness, where the residents live in tents and share a community outhouse. But Terpsichores not about to let first impressions get in the way of this grand adventure. Tackling its many unique challenges with her can-do attitude, she starts making things happen to make Alaska seem more like home. Soon, she and her family are able to start settling in and enjoying their new surroundingseveryone except her mother, that is. So, in order to stay, Terpsichore hatches a plan to convince her that its a wonderfuland civilizedplace to live . . . a plan thats going to take all the love, energy, and Farmer Boy expertise Terpsichore can muster.
As the synopsis indicates, the story is based on fact. President Roosevelt did create the Palmer Colony project for people to make a fresh start. The synopsis tells us that Daggs story an "exciting pioneering" one, but anytime I see "pioneering" in the context of stories like this, I wonder about the people whose lands were being made available to those "pioneers."

In her authors note, Dagg writes (p. 290):
A notable omission in accounts I read of the Palmer Colony was reference to the people who were in Alaska for thousands of years before the colonists: the various Eskimo, Aleut, Athabaskan, and other Indian tribes. Since I married into a part-Native family, I was concerned about this omission, but finally decided not to create contacts with Native peoples if the colonists themselves did not mention them. However, I hope as many readers as possible will visit the Anchorage Museum to learn more about the original colonists of Alaska.
Im curious about the "part-Native family." Are the people shes referring to as "part-Native" citizens of their tribal nation? Generally used, "part Native" means that someone in your ancestry was, or is, a Native person from a specific tribal nation. Quite often, though, people who use "part-Native" arent aware that stating a Native identity goes hand-in-hand with being a citizen of that nation. This citizenship is not about being "part" Native. If youre a tribal citizen, youre a tribal citizen, period.

Im uneasy with the phrase "the original colonists of Alaska." Alaska Natives were not "original colonists." They are the first peoples of that land. Their homelands were colonized--in this case--by the families who were part of this federal project. I anticipate some people will think that Im being hypercritical in pointing to "original colonists" as problematic, but it is important that we pay attention to words and what they convey. If we were to accept Daggs description of Aleut, Athabaskan, and other Indian tribes as "original colonists" we start down a slope that says it wasnt their homeland from the start. That it belonged to... nobody, and therefore, any rights they have to that land can be dismissed.

And, Daggs suggestion that readers visit the Anchorage Museum... It makes me wonder if she had Native readers in mind. She was probably thinking of white kids.

An appropriate aside: Not long ago I read a spot-on comic by Ricardo Cat of Kewa (Santo Domingo) Pueblo. He has been doing Without Reservations for several years. The one Im thinking of is of a Native kid in a museum asking something like "what kind of a field trip is this?! We have all this stuff at home." Biting, and brilliant, too.

Back to Daggs book...

Who were the "pioneers" involved with the Palmer Project? People who were living in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota in 1934. The Palmer Museum has this info:
To be chosen from the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota, only "honest-to-God" farmers, couples between the ages of 25 and 40 with Scandinavian backgrounds would be considered. In exchange for a $3,000, 30-year loan, each family would be given a 40-acre tract of land, a house, a barn, a well, and an out-building. Those families that chose tracts with poor soil conditions and hilly landscape were given 80 acres. In all 203 families were chosen for the colony.
Daggs character, Trip (short for Terpsichore), and her family are one of those families. When Dagg and her sisters learn about the plan to move there, heres what they say (p. 5)
Im not living in an igloo!" That was Cally, shaking her head in horror, which made her ringlets bob. Im not eating whale blubber! That was Polly. Her ringlets bobbed too.
They are, in short, putting forth information they hold about Alaska Native homes and foods, and, theyre rejecting it. That passage tells us that, although Dagg chose not to create Native people for her characters to interact with, she didnt leave Native peoples out altogether. She introduced stereotypes, but left them intact. That was an opportunity for her to push back on them, but she didnt. Indeed, if shed had Native peoples in mind as she developed this book, she could have created Native characters who could, in fact, push back on the information that Cally and Polly have in their heads. What she did do, is have Trips dad say that theyre not going to the Arctic Circle, and that the Matanuska Valley is much like northern Wisconsin. This, I assume, is sufficient to tell the girls that they wont be living in an igloo or eating whale blubber, but it leaves exotic ideas about Alaska Natives intact.

Actually getting to Alaska means getting there by ship. As theyre boarding, someone sings a song Trip recognizes, but they change the lyrics (p. 44):
Terpsichore recognized the tune. It was Gene Autrys version of Springtime in the Rockies, but they had changed the words. Terpsichore laughed along with the crowd at the new words: When its springtime in Alaska and its ninety-nine below . . . Where the berries grow like pumpkins and a cabbage fills a truck . . . We want to make a new start somewhere without delay. So, here we are, Alaska, AND WE HAVE COME TO STAY!
Curious about the song, I looked it up and so far didnt find those lyrics. The first line is easy to find but the rest, I think, is Daggs own writing. Reading the words "we have come to stay" may seem jovial and innocuous to some, but to me, theyre pretty aggressive. Music is a big part of Sweet Home Alaska. The family has a tough go of it once theyre there, but at the end, they sing "Home Sweet Home." Theyre there to stay. Again, this may seem innocuous, but ending with that song tells readers that, indeed, they were there "TO STAY."

Though a lot of people are going to love Daggs book and its echoes of Little House, I think it is worse than Little House because it was written in the last few years. Daggs editor is Nancy Paulsen. The creation, publication, and marketing of Sweet Home Alaska tells us that writers like Dagg, and editors like Nancy Paulsen, have a long way to go.

I do not recommend Sweet Home Alaska.

And, I do not recommend The Smell of Other Peoples Houses, either.

Note (April 18, 2016): Thank you, anon, for letting me know that, partway thru the review, I had spelled the authors name incorrectly (as Dabb instead of Dagg). Ive corrected those errors.
