Streamlink 0 5 0 Adds Support For Streaming Google Drive Google Docs Videos


Streamlink 0.5.0 was released yesterday, bringing support for streaming videos from Google Drive / Google Docs, along with other improvements.

Forked from Livestreamer, which is no longer maintained, Streamlink is a command line tool (and API) that can be used to stream videos from various streaming services, such as Twitch, YouTube Live and many more, and play them using your favorite video player, be it VLC, mpv, and more.

It is is available for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS.

Changes in Streamlink 0.5.0 include:
  • added support for streaming videos stored on Google Drive / Google Docs;
  • added support for BBC iPlayer live and VOD, along with support for HLS streams;
  • add support for Beam VOD and HLS streams for live;
  • added support for camsoda.com;
  • added new plugin: canlitv;
  • added new plugin: garena;
  • Aliez plugin now accepts any TLD;
  • added support for avi/mov VOD streams for rtve;
  • removed dead plugins such as blip.tv, gaminglive.tv, leon.tv, livestation.com and more.

Since our initial article about Streamlink, the tool has seen quite a few improvements, including support to use FFmpeg to mux separate video and audio streams, along with new plugins and much more. Check out the Streamlink GitHub releases page for a complete changelog.

Using the Streamlink command line interface is very simple. Heres an example using a Google Drive video. The first thing you need to do is run Streamlink with the link you want to stream, to see the available streams:

streamlink http://ift.tt/2nJJCEG
This should list the available formats:

Available streams: 360p_alt, 480p_alt, 360p (worst), 480p, 720p, 1080p (best)

Next, simply add one of the available streams at the end of the command, and Streamlink will start streaming:

streamlink http://ift.tt/2nJJCEG 1080p
By default, Streamlink uses VLC to play the stream, but you can specify a different video player by using the "--player" argument, e.g. "--player mpv" to use mpv instead.

Install Streamlink


Ubuntu / Linux Mint users can install Streamlink by using the main WebUpd8 PPA. To add the PPA and install Streamlink, use the following commands:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nilarimogard/webupd8
sudo apt update
sudo apt install streamlink


I didnt add a direct deb download link because the PPA provides quite a few dependencies required to install Streamlink.

Streaming And Recording App OBS Studio Sees New Release


OBS Studio 0.14.0 was released today (and 0.14.1 shortly as a hotfix release), adding deinterlacing, full NVIDIA NVENC encoder support, ALSA sound input source on Linux and more.


OBS Studio Ubuntu Xenial

OBS Studio is a free, open source application which allows video recording and live streaming, available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. 

The application is popular among game streamers, being used to stream to various popular websites such as Twitch.tv, YouTube, Hitbox.tv, Vaughn Live / iNSTAGIB.tv, DailyMotion, Connectcast.tv, GoodGame.ru, CyberGame.tv, CashPlay.tv along with custom streaming servers.

Among the changes in the latest OBS Studio 0.14.0 / 0.14.1 are:
  • added deinterlacing. Deinterlacing modes can now be used by right-clicking the source and going to "deinterlacing" in the menu to select the deinterlacing options. Deinterlacing only works on sources that support it (video capture device source and media source primarily);
  • added full NVIDIA NVENC encoder. NVENC is supported for windows and linux, and can be used via the simple output mode. (Note: To use NVENC on linux, you must compile or get a version of FFmpeg with NVENC support);
  • added alt-cropping (cropping via the alt-key). This type of crop only affects the specific scene item and does not affect all instances of a source. You can also change the specific crop number values in the source transform dialog;
  • added a slide transition;
  • added a fade to color transition;
  • Added command line parameters: --collection [scene collection name], --profile [profile name], --scene [scene name], --startstreaming, --startrecording;
  • added "snap to other sources" feature (enabled by default, can be disabled in general settings);
  • added "snap to vertical/horizontal center" feature (disabled by default, option to enable is in general settings);
  • Linux: added an option "Use alpha-less texture format" option to window capture that helps capturing certain windows with mesa drivers;
  • Linux: added an ALSA sound input source (currently added like any other source, will be accessible via audio settings as well in the future);
  • various other minor changes and bug fixes.

Install OBS Studio in Ubuntu or Linux Mint via PPA


To be able to use OBS Studio in Ubuntu 14.04, Linux Mint 17.x and derivatives, youll need FFMpeg, which isnt available in the official repositories for this Ubuntu version. You can install FFMpeg backported from newer Ubuntu versions in Ubuntu 14.04 / Linux Mint 17.x by using a PPA:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kirillshkrogalev/ffmpeg-next
sudo apt update
sudo apt install ffmpeg
OBS Studio depends on the FFMpeg version in this PPA and it doesnt seem to work with newer FFMpeg like the one from THIS PPA.

To add the official OBS Studio PPA and install the application in Ubuntu 16.04, 15.10 or 14.04 / Linux Mint 17.x and derivatives, use the following commands:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studio

OBS Studio for other Linux distributions (unofficial packages): Arch Linux (AUR - git version), openSUSE and Gentoo.

For other Linux distributions, youll need to build it from source.

This weekend I implemented a new protobuf feature. It happens to be something that would be very helpful to me in implementing Captain Proto, but I suspect it would also prove useful to many other users.

Background

Probably the biggest deficiency in the open source protocol buffers libraries today is a lack of built-in support for handling streams of messages. True, its not too hard for users to support it manually, by prefixing each message with its size. However, this is awkward, and typically requires users to reach into the low-level CodedInputStream/CodedOutputStream classes and do a lot of work manually.

Furthermore, many users want to handle streams of heterogeneous message types. We tell them to wrap their messages in an outer type using the "union" pattern. But this is kind of ugly and has unnecessary overhead.

These problems never really came up in our internal usage, because inside Google we have an RPC system and other utility code which builds on top of Protocol Buffers and provides appropriate abstraction. While wed like to open source this code, a lot of it is large, somewhat messy, and highly interdependent with unrelated parts of our environment, and no one has had the time to rewrite it all cleanly (as we did with protocol buffers itself).

Proposed solution: Generated Visitors

Ive been wanting to fix this for some time now, but didnt really have a good idea how. CodedInputStream is annoyingly low-level, but I couldnt think of much better an interface for reading a stream of messages off the wire.

A couple weeks ago, though, I realized that I had been failing to consider how new kinds of code generation could help this problem. I was trying to think of solutions that would go into the protobuf base library, not solutions that were generated by the protocol compiler.

So then it became pretty clear: A protobuf message definition can also be interpreted as a definition for a streaming protocol. Each field in the message is a kind of item in the stream.

All we need to do is generate code appropriate for treating MyStream as a stream, rather than one big message.

My approach is to generate two interfaces, each with two provided implementations. The interfaces are "Visitor" and "Guide". MyStream::Visitor looks like this:

The Visitor class has two standard implementations: "Writer" and "Filler". MyStream::Writer writes the visited fields to a CodedOutputStream, using the same wire format as would be used to encode MyStream as one big message. MyStream::Filler fills in a MyStream message object with the visited values.

Meanwhile, Guides are objects that drive Visitors.

The two standard implementations of Guide are "Reader" and "Walker". MyStream::Reader reads items from a CodedInputStream and passes them to the visitor. MyStream::Walker walks over a MyStream message object and passes all the fields to the visitor.

To handle a stream of messages, simply attach a Reader to your own Visitor implementation. Your visitors methods will then be called as each item is parsed, kind of like "SAX" XML parsing, but type-safe.

Nonblocking I/O

The "Reader" type declared above is based on blocking I/O, but many users would prefer a non-blocking approach. Im less sure how to handle this, but my thought was that we could provide a utility class like:

class NonblockingHelper { public: template <typename MessageType> NonblockingHelper(typename MessageType::Visitor* visitor); // Push data into the buffer. If the data completes any // fields, they will be passed to the underlying visitor. // Any left-over data is remembered for the next call. void PushData(void* data, int size); }; 

With this, you can use whatever non-blocking I/O mechanism you want, and just have to push the data into the NonblockingHelper, which will take care of calling the Visitor as necessary.
