Swagman

Swagman is a game that was made by Core Design Limited in 1997. Core were probably best known for Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series. Swagman was released on the Playstation and the Sega Saturn. The story is set in Paradise Falls that has a population of 220. I thought I would blog about it because this is a game from my memory and there doesnt seem to be any information on the game. Look around the web and nothing comes up, like seriously?

This may sound weird but I keep the game close and have done so since it was released. The game itself used to scare me to death. Specially the music...yeah Core were best known for scary music. Try the Tomb Raider series for example and youll know what I mean. Music that makes you fear playing. Does the Swagman music scare me anymore? Nope!!! As a child it was a different story.

The Swagman is quite a creeper to say the least...but you should have seen the two main characters in CG now that was SCARY!!! I literally had to not look while they were featured. They look cuter in the game but the main CG...YUCK!!! People were right about ugly character design or animation it really is...off-putting now I know why everyone hated The Romance Of Miss Boopdesigns. And now character design is my number one. People seem to hate deformed looking characters. But then again like I said in that Generation O!post...fish face designs. Cool characters but...again ugly designs.

Listen to the music and youll think...creepy.

And you know why Swagman gave me chills as a child? It reminded me so much of the 1992 stop-motion animation The Sandman. You know by Paul Berry?

The Swagman turns up in the town and goes after a boy and girl. The game doesnt explain 100% without the book. But the boy Zack and his sister Hannahsummoned the Swagman by reading some sort of magic book. A fairy like creature appears to help them but is caught by the Swagman. Apparently her power wasnt strong enough to save the children?

Zack the boy with the spider like hairstyle is the main character hes a typical 90s kid. I think CORE were thinking Zelda at the time of making the game. Because Zack can attack with a torch and can also push boxes. You can play as two characters the boy and girl but you first need to save the girl who has been shrunk to the size of a doll and locked in a cage.

There are a few 3D game effects here and there. Once Zack obtains the bombs he can blast open walls. See bombs!? ZELDA!!!

The health bar in the game is the Zzzzzz meter. When it runs out Zack or Hannah dies. There is a way to heal the Zzzzzz meter. If Zack or Hannah pass someone else who is sleeping they can heal their HP. Including...standing on your mothers snoring head and healing your HP. Zacks Mom: I had a dream that someone was standing on my head!

One room scares the hell out of me...it has a snooker table and 3D pool cue that you use for snooker...magically fly into the air and try to attack you.

The ghosts that give chase are annoying as hell. First they are slow...later on in the game they are ten times that.

Once Zack comes across a mirror he can enter it. When he enters the mirror he will turn into a monster. He can attack, headbutt and breath fire. He must destroy the Swagmans territory by killing all the monsters...which are cactus like.

At the end of the garden is a warp point. I forgot to flip...the switch...damn!!! According to the bug man...I forgot his name the bugs will open the path. The bugs will walk on the PYRAMID and EYE and STAR symbols and Zack must follow them. If you didnt collect the bugs you are so screwed.

Zack will release the fairy thing. She reveals she is a Dreamflight...more like a Lara Croft wannabe that can float...and there are actually 11 more of them that need to be saved...what the hell.

The boss is a massive pumpkin who can hit you...breath fire...and grab you which instantly kills you. And this is just the first boss!!! Guess Hannah will never be saved because I give up. And I can see why it did get the reviews it did. The first part is easy and then it gets too hard too quick. I cannot sugar coat any games I play. I have to say it like it is. And no Im no gaming expert but I know when a game is impossible to complete or get through and Swagman does just that. As much as I like something I always end up calling stuff out.

Poor Zack and Hannah being swagged into the Swagmans...err...mouth. Hes such a creeper!!! He got what he wanted the boy and girl. Well then again they had it coming...playing around with some witchcraft like book. Well we cant really say witchcraft but something of a similar nature. As hard as the game is and even though it has poor reviews this game is a part of my memories. The game also seems somewhat Anime inspired but with a twist. Shame Core have never thought about making a HD remake or porting the game to STEAM or passing it off as a INDIE game because it looks like one of them. Im sure people would love to see the game. Guess we wont be seeing a HD remake of Swagman any time soon. Which is a shame to be honest because they had a really good concept. But thats just what I think but other people dont think the same. What I think is great...other people would probably not. Ever had a game your parents wouldnt or wont buy for you?

I knew a boy who wanted a Nippon Ichi game featuring Angels and Demons and his mother refused to buy it for him. Now this was years back. She read the back of the game cover and said NO! She as a mother was very religious and didnt want her child playing anything like that. And so her son missed out on playing the game in which he really wanted to play. What was the game? It was Disgaea. So yeah you cannot always have what you want and as humans we cannot always get what we want. Even those with great wealth cant always have their way. They may have everything in the world. Things they think are important and in reality they are not. But those kinds of people will never open their eyes and learn because they are too busy having too much fun spending their cash on stupid things like pools for their dogs or expensive clothes that were made in CHINA...haha! And just because it has a certain brand on it. But then again this world is a very warped place. As people look at what others are wearing and judge them. So if they wore a brand name people would think WOW!!! Mainly the younger generation. They were like that in my time so of course I would know and they have not changed. I guess we need a Swagman of our very own to put each and every one of us into a dream world. To be honest I think we already have a Swagman so there really is no need.
